TOP THEATRE HIGH SCHOOL NOMINATIONS - August 24, 2010

Top High School Nominations Now Open!
Written by Jacob Coakley
Aug 18, 2010

A production of Les Misérables at Valley Christian High School in San Jose, Calif., the Southwest area winner in the 2009 High School Honors Program.
LAS VEGAS-Stage Directions is now accepting nominations for their annual High School Theatre Honors Program. The program honors outstanding theatre programs across the U.S. and Canada. Theatre administrators, teachers, students and fans are encouraged to nominate spectacular high school theatre programs at http://www.stage-directions.com/tophighschools .

"There is an amazing amount of talent and dedication on display every day in high school theatres everywhere," said Stage Directions Editor Jacob Coakley. "And the hallmarks of a great theatre department are more than what appears onstage. It's the training for the performers that happen in classrooms; the skills learned while building sets and designing staging. It's also found in the dedication of the community of volunteers around a program (and every program has them), and the passion and commitment teachers and administrators bring to the program to keep them going in these times of budget cutbacks. This is our way of honoring the exceptional theatre programs that continue to raise the bar for what's possible."

In addition to the open nomination process, Stage Directions will also conduct an informal survey of teachers, professors and recruiters across the country to find those who excel. The winners from each region (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Northwest, Southwest and Canada) will be profiled in the November issue.

"Each and every year we are impressed by the quality and quantity of amazing theatre programs in schools," said Stage Directions publisher Terry Lowe. "We can't wait to see what remarkable schools come to light this year and encourage everyone to nominate their program!"

Teachers, students, administrators, parents, volunteers and anyone else proud of a program can nominate a school online at www.stage-directions.com/tophighschools.

CHARITY Designs Compromised - October 17, 2009

Thank you to the very few (less than 10) people who attended Saturday's Work Call. Extra special thanks to Mike Nance and Billy Violette who worked the entire day! And to Lew and Helene Phillips and Joan Gibble for lending a hand.

Due to the miserable turn-out, original designs must be modified and compromised, some elements being completely cut from the show. I am certain that more than 10 people said they were attending Saturday.

Remember that every student must complete 10 hours of work outside of regular school hours. Those who are procrastinating will certainly regret not attending when their grade lowers one letter grade due to incomplete work hours.

Please check the schedule listed in the entry below if you plan to attend future work calls.
